How to Have a Romantic Adventure

The kids are out of school, the air is warm, and summer is in full swing. Now may be the perfect time to reconnect with your spouse and take a romantic summer adventure. It doesn’t have to be fancy, or cost a lot of money, it’s not about taking an extravagant trip… what it is about is taking the time to stop and appreciate your relationship. We all need to take time out to emotionally connect with each other and spiritually connect with God. Consider these 8 romantic adventures that aim to do just that.

PLAN A PICNIC IN THE PARK

Nothing says romance like a good old-fashioned picnic, checkered blanket optional. Take a little time to prepare a special, travel friendly meal for your spouse. Think finger foods, fruit, cheese, olives, crusty bread, and maybe even a bottle of wine. Make sure to pack disposal containers, plates, and cutlery or toothpicks. Steer clear of foods that contain mayonnaise or could spoil easily.

Pick a favorite park or lake and take some time to enjoy each other’s company. People watch, toss a Frisbee, fly a kite, and most importantly- talk. Be sure to really look around and take in the beauty of nature that God has laid before you.

COOK A MEAL TOGETHER

Everyone loves a romantic, home–cooked meal, why not try making one together. Choose a meal from your favorite cookbook or restaurant and then follow the instructions. It’s a fun way to work on your communication skills and in the end you can share something you made together. Light a few candles and make a romantic evening of it. A full meal sound too intimidating? You could also make store bought cookies together, anything that requires teamwork!

TAKE AN IMPROMPTU ROAD TRIP

It doesn’t have to be far, just fill up the tank and get in the car. Explore roadside stops or that cute little town you always wanted to visit but never have time to stop at. Turn down the radio and spend time talking with your spouse as you explore wide-open spaces.

PAY IT FORWARD

One of the most meaningful and fun adventures you could have with your spouse is to pay it forward. Find a cause that you are both interested in and spend the day volunteering together. Plant trees in your community, visit a nursing home, spend time at a soup kitchen, or volunteer at your church. Share a little kindness with others and your spouse.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Many local communities offer a historic city walk. Take time to learn more about the culture and history of your community while holding hands and spending quality time together. Connect to the past while moving forward in your relationship.

STAR GAZE

Pull out a blanket and wait for it to get dark. Warm summer nights are the perfect time to sit back and do a little star gazing. Buy a star chart at a local bookstore or download an astronomy app to your phone. Pick out the constellations, share stories, and take in God’s unfolding glory together.

BREAK OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

In the true spirit of adventure break out of your comfort zone and try something a little different together. Take a hot air balloon ride, try a zipline, go horseback riding, anything that you haven’t tried before. Your spouse will be right there by your side experiencing the thrill with you every step of the way.

RECREATE YOUR FIRST DATE

Do you remember your first date together? Try re-creating that memorable first step in your relationship. Watch the same movie or go to the same restaurant. Remember the youthful days of promise and excitement when you first fell in love. Talk about what drew you to your spouse in the first place and consider all of the twists and turns that have brought you to this moment.

Whatever it is that you choose to do, do it together and reflect on the commitment that you have made to one another and to God. You deserve happiness… together.
