What If My Spouse Doesn’t Want to Save Our Marriage

Ask God to Step In

Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me (Psalm 50:15)

Spouses can’t force their partners to stay in a marriage. Psychological games and veiled threats can leave the hurting spouse emotionally traumatized. Ask God to change the reluctant spouse’s heart and expose areas that need work. Sometimes stubborn pride, limited finances or feelings of inadequacy are root causes to marital strife. Prayer helps – and it works!

Envision The Marriage You Want And Deserve

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them (Mark 11:24)

Just because a reluctant spouse isn’t fighting for the marriage, doesn’t mean a hurting spouse should give up:

  • Give it over instead of giving up: Pray and let God work on it.

  • Forgive and don’t fight or beg: If a reluctant spouse wants to leave, let them go to reduce tension and arguments. Sometimes separation and time strengthens marriages. The prodigal son soon came back.

  • Work on inner-strength instead of being manipulated: Spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual needs are important. Start new hobbies, audit classes, attend Bible workshops.

  • Envision the ideal marriage instead of thinking about divorce: Ask God to intervene, read the Bible, fellowship with others and trust God’s timing.

Start Counseling, Even If Individually at First

Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16)

Reluctant spouses might not willingly attend counseling, but hurting spouses should attend. Counseling offers tools to become stronger emotionally. The reluctant spouse may eventually attend counseling.

Saving a marriage takes time, prayer and counseling. Hurting spouses should build their inner-strength: Ask for God’s mercy and intervention, and envision and pray for the marriage of their dreams.
