Delicious Sourdough Waffles

One of our favorite things is to sit down together as a family for breakfast. There is nothing like starting off the day with a hearty meal and good conversation with family and friends. In our fast paced lives it can be hard to take the time to sit down and enjoy the first meal of the day, we have become a society that simply grabs and goes. While we gulp our coffee in the car and wolf down a piece of toast on the bus we are missing the important connections that can be made when we come to the table refreshed from a good night’s sleep and optimistic about the start of a new day.

One of our favorite breakfast staples are sourdough waffles. These light and tangy waffles are best served with fruit and warm maple syrup. Try making some time on a Saturday morning to make breakfast with your family. The memories you make around the table are the ones that will last a lifetime.

INGREDIENTS:

6 Cups white flour
2 Packages dry yeast
5 Cups lukewarm water
4 Eggs
4 TBSP. Milk
2 TSP. Baking Soda
4 TBSP. Sugar
You will also need non-stick cooking spray, butter, and syrup.

STEPS:

The night before you cook your waffles, mix the flour, yeast, and lukewarm water together in a tall mixing bowl. Cover with a towel and let the mixture sit at room temperature overnight. In the morning, uncover and stir. The dough should rise quite a bit and it will have a funny texture. Don’t worry!

Add the eggs and milk to the dough mixture. You may want to add the milk and eggs slowly to give them time to incorporate into the dough. In a separate bowl combine the baking soda and sugar. Mix until there are no lumps. Add the soda and sugar mixture into the waffle dough and stir until completely blended.

Let the dough rest for about 15 minutes after mixing. This is a great time to get your waffle iron ready to go. Heat it up and spray a little non-stick cooking spray onto the iron. Cook the waffles until they are golden brown and then serve with your favorite fruit, some butter, and warm maple syrup!
